As frets wear with play, tone loss buzz and tiredness occur, a simple re-crown and dress will return the guitar to its old bright self.

If the frets are worn out, (too low to dress) then it's time for a re-fret, while the frets are out, it's possible to assess the shape of the fingerboard by holding the instrument in a jig in the same shape as when under string tension and tuned to pitch. With no strings or frets it is now possible to work on levelling the fingerboard and address problems such as rising tongue and warp with specialised levelling beams.

Getting it right isn't so much an art, but more a precise science. When the new frets are in place they are levelled and dressed using the same jig and beams.
