Noisy pots are caused by dirt and dust particles interfering with the moviing surfaces within the component and while WD 40 is sometimes used by D.I.Y.ers, it is not to be recomended here.

Whilst it does seem initially to do the trick, it leaves a waxy residue, a nice place for future dust and dirt to stick to. Only the correct electrical component solvent cleaner should be used which flushes out the grime and totally evaporates leaving no residue.

Bad/broken soldering causes intermittent faults or complete loss of signal (often caused by loose sockets/switches/pots)
